. (from 1970)
.
Someday I’m going to climb a tree
to reach its very highest limb
and there I’ll sit and listen to
the merry music of the wind.
Spying on the world below
from my secret hiding place
I’ll chuckle softly to myself
each time a bird flies past my face.
I’ll hug a branch and sing out loud:
way up here my eyes can fly!
Then climbing down most carefully
I’ll whisper, see you later, sky.

I love the cleverness of your children’s poems. I wrote a bunch of them once too, but they are buried in my boxes and boxes of old files. You almost inspire me enough to get me to go and look for them.

Thomas, I remember you telling me before about your children’s poems and I hope you’ll someday dig them out of their boxes. It would be a pleasure to read them!! I’ll be waiting….. 🙂

If we think to we can still get back to that place we knew so well as children. This is a fine reminder. 😀 Thank you.

So true, Ben – I’m already there, much of the time! 😀

Ah…as a child I had such a place…this poem made me chuckle as I recalled those hours staring at the sky. 🙂

Glad it brought back memories, SLP. There’s nothing quite like reaching that high spot in a tall tree.
(We had a large fir tree in our neighborhood that had been topped years earlier, which provided a little “seat” at the top. I’d climb up there and sing “You are my sunshine” at the top of my lungs. Not sure what the neighbors thought, but it was a joyful time. 🙂

Perhaps it is the child in me but I love this poem.
It is a long time since I have said “see you later” to the sky.
Maybe I should do it more often 🙂

Thanks, David – maybe we all should talk to the sky more often. (I’d love to be able to climb trees once more – now I just hug them. 🙂 )

Betty, I really must be in my fourth childhood, because I love this poem. It speaks to my tree-climbing heart! Yes, I am 65, and I still climb an occasional tree! And I talk to the sky and the wind and get ready to join you guys here most days! Love this one–one of your best!

Me too, Granbee! I’m 65 too, (4th childhood at least!) and would love to climb a tree, but as I said to David, nowadays I can only hug them. 🙂 Glad you liked this one!

I like how high you reach here, Betty. ‘See you later, sky.’ It’s been a while since I climbed a tree. The dares of childhood. It’s fun to get back in touch with such pursuits.

Love all of it but especially:
‘I’ll hug a branch and sing out loud:
way up here my eyes can fly!
Then climbing down most carefully
I’ll whisper, see you later, sky.’
You writing was very mature and lyrical even ‘back then’, Betty!
