(Maeberie series)
.
Usually in the hills
she found her peace
but now the crows
were clamoring
above her head,
Let go! they squawked,
Move on, move on!
.
She raised her hand
for them to stop
and sat beneath
an old elm tree
where she fell into a reverie
of magic meadow,
sapphire sky
beyond corporeality
and there
she found him waiting.
.
He laid his sword
upon the ground,
the battle won,
no more to hide.
Their hearts filled
with silver light
entwined in fascination.
.
When she awoke
the day had circled
into night.
The crows had flown
and all was quiet
on the path
that took her home
while high above, unnoticed
twirled a dancing double star.

This sweeps me away to Avalon, it truly does! Very masterful and so very complete in the perfectly matched love and magical beings.

Thank you, Granbee – glad it swept you away to Avalon! And I guess we’re all magical beings when it comes down to it. 🙂

Thanks, Willow! I’ll check for your latest posting with the crows – I’m way behind on blog reading. Funny how so many of us are in “sync”, at times!

I love the last stanza, Betty…the silence and yet the noticeable star. I love it when silence allows for brightness to shine, and also for other things to resonate, like the idea of “home”. I like the way you included all those things in the ending.

Your Mayberrie poems are always some of your best, Betty. Part of it is the flying away into another, more ancient universe than the one we inhabit. Part of it is the sense of story echoing back into story that fascinates you after reading enough of them.
Sometimes the past
flips upside down
and turns into the future
There is truth in these lines, and they inform the whole poem right up until …
When she awoke
the day had turned
to shadowed night.
The crows had flown
and all was quiet
on the path
that took her home…
Then, then!, she noticed awakening, the shining double star that related back to her dream, back to the moment when the past flipped upside down and turned into the future–the future where she was at after the moment of dream. What a wonderful poem!

Thomas, you really “got it” – the past into future thing. You understood the ambiguity of it, and your comment means a lot to me! Thank you so much, as always, for your insights.

Oh, Christine – don’t apologize. I’m way behind on reading blogs too – not to mention replying to comments and posting some poetry. I think we all have the same problem here, for one reason or another!
Thank you so much for commenting, and I hope you have a great day. 🙂 xx

Wow Betty!! This is stunning. You know, if you published your poems, especially this series, I would buy them. Every time I read one of these I long to sit, curled up by the fire, and be lost in the realms of magic :-).
