(a Mayberrie poem)
.
At noon she heard
the swarm of bees
and knew they’d lead her
to the woman in the woods
who kept their hive.
Maybe she could trade
her pouch of agates
for a little jar of honey.
.
Starting down the common trail
she heard the heavy clops
of many horses.
King’s men! She stepped aside,
prepared to curtsey,
then she saw his face
and so much tender in his eyes
she swooned, her heart a-thunder.
.
Waking in a sunlit patch
of summer grass
she sat up, drowsily.
Where were the bees?
What daylight faint was this?
Her agates too were gone.
.
And then she remembered –
the horses, and his countenance!
She felt a shine
on her left hand
and there around her finger
was a smoldering ring
with royal seal,
and nestled at her side
was a little jar of honey.

OH Betty!! I’m swooning at my keyboard, eyes tearing up–I gasped, and now I just keep murmuring, “oh, oh, oh”, in awe. And I so love that you used “agates”!!! I may have to borrow that, down the line. Great good work, my dear–fabulous, Bravo!

Caddo, thank you – the “gasp” is always a prized compliment. 🙂 (I didn’t know where this poem was going until the last lines wrote themselves – writing is funny that way sometimes, isn’t it?)

Yes, I say that all the time, that my poems write themselves–which makes it all the more magical, and keeps me in the game!!

Yes, magical, isn’t it? Especially those poems written from the deepest places in our hearts.
Caddo, this comment was in my spam folder tonight! That’s the first time it’s happened. But I’ve un-spammed you. Hopefully one by one you’ll have fewer of these problems. Just glad I caught this one!!!!

Betty, I did not comment on this? Hmmm…
It is as magical as all of your Mayberrie poems. We are up to the point in the story where there is hope for a commoner in a romance that should not be. It looks like the war is over, and the warrior is now king. Is it now time for romance that stir romantic souls? We shall see…. Won’t we?

Thomas, thank you, as always for reading these.
As for where this goes next, I don’t know yet. Romance is always present, yet physically out of reach so far – so I’ll just do the usual – let my subconscious come up with the next one. No doubt the spiritual relationship will continue!
