Shadows grow hungry,
the sky is in knots,
apples are mellow –
the faeries draw lots,
.
rabbits have vanished
from safe hiding spots,
hawk flies in circles
connecting the dots.

Somehow this feels quite chilling; not how I normally view September. Especially like the line
“the sky is in knots”

Ben, this actually started out as a haiku, but the rhyme/meter took over, turning it into a longer poem – and it does seem to lack life. I almost didn’t post it. (September always brings me down a little, with the days growing shorter, and the prospect of winter in sight.) So yeah – “chilling” was the right reaction, though initially unintended. π As always, thank you for your feedback!

Autumn (and thus September) was my favourite season as a child and in early adulthood. I think there is something for me cosy and comforting about the gradual closing in after the experienced lack of boundaries in the Summer. These days I have started to welcome the new awakenings of Spring more than I used to do too and so it now ties with Autumn for my affections. π

It seems many people love Autumn best. Spring has always been my favorite – the new greenery, seeing the shadows grow shorter and shorter – and falling in love. π But I do admit Fall is beautiful, with the leaves turning brilliant colors. And I always look forward to winter storms, and hopefully a little snow. Every season certainly has its charm!
BTW, part of the “chill” of this poem might come especially from the last 4 lines. All the wild rabbits around here have truly disappeared – and the hawks do fly over often, so – “connecting the dots…” (The original haiku read something like: “The wood has been chopped / Where have all the rabbits gone? / Hawks circle above.”)
Poor bunnies…. Circle of life, though.

Yes, I think you are right. Plus the hungry shadows of course.

Thank you, Dennis! I thought of you, with the rhyme meter – and also wondered if you’re enjoying the coming of spring down there. Alas… we sent the sun back to you once again. Enjoy it! π Hope all is well down your way.
