I always loved those maple seeds…and in the spring they’d offer new tree for us to plant. 🙂

Best things in life are free, as they say – we’d love playing with them, delighted with their spinning. Nature’s toys! 🙂

I love this Betty…someone told me the botanical name for those whirlybirds is “samaras”. As kids we used to split them and wear them on our noses!

Like Christine, this made me laugh as well. I can just picture it! We never thought of wearing them on our noses – wish we had. Maybe it’s not too late for me to try it. 🙂 (Funny how “samaras” seems to fit them well.)

You have to split them very carefully, along the seam, with your fingernail, and carefully remove the seed, then fit the little seed-pouch over the tip, or the bridge of your nose…..hmm would our noses be too big for that now? But the earring idea is great! 🙂

Come to think of it, someone is probably already making earrings out of those samaras and selling them on etsy…

Cynthia, I finally gave this a try but the seed pod was dry and hard like a rock – my fingernail wouldn’t penetrate it. It was from a big leaf maple and was dried out a bit – maybe if I soaked it in water. Probably a “greener” seed pouch would be a little softer? (And maybe one from a vine maple or one of the smaller varieties?) Still love the idea, and the image in my head of a nose-copter. 🙂

Oh this is fabulous Betty! Maple-copters, I love it! I also loved what Cynthia said about wearing them split on her nose. It made me laugh because I can only picture the ‘now’ Cynthia doing it!! 😄 xxx

Thanks, Christine! As I said to Cynthia, maybe it’s not too late for you and me to try it! And they’d make fun earrings. 🙂
