.
We are tuna fish
breathing the sea,
oblivious to mayo and toast.
.
We are cocoa
in the hot southern bean,
our proof is not yet in the pudding.
.
We are tomato
bulging acid in red sun,
unsuspecting the BLT.
.
We are lettuce leaf
photosynthesized,
ignorant of a thousand islands.
.
We are potato,
white jewel buried in soil
unconscious of sour cream and chives.
.
We are yeast,
multiplying dark spaces
waiting to be kneaded.
.

Thanks very much, Candice – I hadn’t thought of it in terms of a Mandela but you’re right. Your vision of this poem exceeded my own. π

I love it when that happens, when a reader or listener understands a layer I wasn’t even aware of while writing.

Not at all – I’m deeply moved by your ability as a poet – in times of hardship we write out our best which seems so wrong on one level and so natural and understandable on another. You know how to elevate meaning. I simply appreciate your result

If someday I happen onto a rainbow pooling in a mist from a waterfall alive with light filtered through trees larger than any found on earth, I expect Betty Hayes Albright to be there sitting on a great anthracite stone, smiling.

Such a poetic comment, Thomas – and I would love to be there, sitting on that anthracite stone in such surroundings. Thank you again, my friend.
