A simple thing
to scatter his ashes
one would think
but Mt. Rainier
will never be
the same.

To scatter ashes
To see the flashes
Of a life gone too soon
Let them be blessed by sun and moon
A life short but blessed
With in your heart alive it rests.

This is true. Thank you, Ben, for saying it so eloquently. As always. 🦋

I was attempting to express what I took away from reading and digesting your poem.

And you did so more succinctly than my poem. Yours is another one I’m going to keep. (Copied it in longhand and tucked away with memorial cards received. It means a lot to me that you “digested” it.)

It was well worthy of careful digestion. There are qualities in your poem that are not present in my response, but that is natural given what you were writing about and your relation to the subject matter. I am sure your poem will be one you return to many times over the years and I hope it will continue to comfort you like votive candle.

It will. As we “speak”, the hiking party is on the way to scatter the ashes. They’re only going up to the 7,100 foot level but way too strenuous for me. My husband will read “Wind Chime” so I’ll be there in spirit. An emotional day there and here at home. Thank you for being part of it, Ben, in this conversation.

Thank you, John, for your thoughtful words. (My son passed the end of May – it’s been a slow process finally getting his ashes scattered in a way he would’ve liked…)

Betty I know he would be very glad of your choice of resting place just as you carry him everywhere within you

He is indeed with me, and my older son Jason felt his presence on the mountain after they scattered his ashes. Jason said it was as though Arlie picked the exact spot. It’s comforting to think that, at least.
Thank you so much for your comments today, Candice. I’ll be writing to you soon.

I’m glad Jason was with you – and that he felt Arlie when you were there. (I always liked the name Arlie by the way – you gave him a beautiful name). Maybe like having a divination rod or stick you were able to find the perfect spot with Arlie’s spirit guiding. Thank you dear one – for your heart and your spirit in this world – you are needed.

Thank you for that, Candice. The same is true of you. And I think you’re right, that Arlie’s spirit was there. (It was a long strenuous hike so I was unable to go along.) Glad you like his name. (I wanted to name him Arlo, as Arlo Guthrie was popular then but my ex didn’t like it. We compromised. 🙂 )

The proud heights of Mount Rainier – how fitting for Arlie.
The pure white snow for love everlasting.
Take care,
Paul

Thank you very much, Paul. His ashes now rest among wildflowers and trees about halfway up the mountain. Come Autumn they’ll be under snow…
Thank you again for your caring words.
Warm regards,
Betty
