When I was ten
all the rides
at Disneyland
could not compare
with that first sight,
that maiden rush
across the sand,
my first kiss
of the sea.

Yes, thankfully my mom took a picture of that moment. (It was taken in California – Long Beach I think.)

Every time I go home to CA this is how I feel. Very nice indeed. 🙂

Thank you! This is in California – Long Beach, I think – does it look familiar?

Anything CA looks familiar, especially the beach. Nice.

Ah, yes, that first glimpse. Living in the Midlands, I am in a way fortunate that I get a rush when I see the sea. One ‘forgets’ that the land doesn’t go on forever. Thank you for bringing such moments rushing back.

Thank you, and you’re welcome. It’s true we never take that view of the sea for granted when we live inland. I’m just over an hour’s drive to the Pacific Ocean, but only get there about once a year. Then it’s so hard to leave!

Thank you, Ben! Such beautiful photos – and the lovely, song took me away to Maeberie. 🙂

I have loved this song for many years. I am not surprised it carried you away to Maeberie; to be honest that’s part of why I used it in my response to “First Love”. The woman with whom I who most closely associate this (apart from Sandy Denny of course 🙂 ) lives in Spain now and has spent most of her life working in NGOs all over the globe. She is one of the two folk I know personally – both women – I most honour and admire.

In light of all that I’m honored that you responded with this song, Ben. I too admire those who are involved with NGOs. They get things done, actually make a positive difference, without all the wastefulness and bureaucracy. Thank you again for sharing this.

Wonderful. Do you know the poem “The Centaur,” by May Swenson? —CC

Doesn’t sound familiar but will look it up…… Okay, just googled it. Sounds wonderful, – another 10 year old! Thanks for the lead, and for your comment.

Aww, the sea and Disneyland both in one beautiful poem! Love this, Betty! (I grew up near Disneyland and am a Disney fanatic.) My husband and I also go to the beach for occasional weekend getaways and they’re always calming experiences…hugs, my friend…

Lauren, you probably were at this same beach at one time then! We were visiting my great aunt down in that area and went to Disneyland (it was brand new!) the day before. It was fun, but it was the ocean that truly enraptured me. You’re right, trips to the ocean (these days in Washington and Oregon) are uplifting. The best medicine. ❤️ Thank you, Lauren.

I’m thinking Newport Beach or Huntington Beach. 🙂 Great memories for both of us…my husband and I love vacationing in Bend, OR. where I went white water river rafting for the first time. It’s so beautiful up north. 💝

Wish my mom was alive so I could ask her what beach that was! Ah well, not important. The ocean is the ocean! 😆 Glad have so many good memories. Cool that you got to go white water rafting in Oregon!!

Totally relate to this. Sea was my first love and still love the beach and ocean as much as ever — and always will be in love.

How could it (compare)?

We had just been to the newly opened highly touted Disneyland the day before thus the comparison. Disneyland was forgettable. 😁 The ocean was the highlight of our trip for this 10 year old. 😊

Nature nearly always claims first love, whether sea or mountains or just a rugged path through a nearby park. Wonderful poem, Betty.

Thank you, Sharon – I have to agree about nature. My best childhood memories all took place outside. (And most of my adult memories too. 🙂 )

Nature is sometimes more loyal than people. At least the rush of feelings as we encounter all her many aspects and blessings.

Albeit, Disneyland is pretty fun, so that must have been one heck of sea kiss.
