This poignant poem by SLP Martin (Charles) deeply moved me. It’s a tender love poem of sorts. Southern California needs rain desperately. It is on fire. Climate change is real.
when
the rains
do not come
why
should we
plow the fields
do we
out of habit
cultivate
the dying earth
as if
making promises
to
a lover
we will
not
meet again
why is it
that
we hold
this dry earth
in our hands
so long
earth
that shall
soon
hold
us
for
eternity
Yes, the foolishness of denial has cost us, is costing us, will continue to cost us unto our likely demise as a species. Sad, that. โค

Indeed, sadly true, Bela. I have hope that something will change before it’s too late.

Hi Betty, This is sad, but there is truth in his words, beautifully expressed. Rain finally arrived in northern Cal. where it was greatly needed, as well. The fires last October were horrific and only an hour north of us, but also in a place where we frequently visit for wine tasting. My sisters are in southern Cal., which is where I was raised, and I think rain is expected soon or has already arrived. Natural disasters, unfortunately, are becoming much more extreme because of human error and ignorance. Thanks for sharing, my friend. Hugs โค

Thanks for reading Charles’ poem, Lauren. It seems that most of the country is experiencing some kind of extreme weather. We had fires up here too (during the summer) from Canada down to Oregon. It seems California always gets it the worst though – and now the mudslides! You’re right about the human error and ignorance.
Hugs back to you! ๐

You’re welcome, and I remember your fires, too. And now the deathly mudslides. So sad. We need the rain, but not in one bucket. We had 5.34″ of rain in a 24-hour period. Crazy! Anyway, hugs back for hump day. ๐ xoxo

Can’t imagine that much rain all at once! It’s terrible all the lives lost and homes destroyed down there.
Hugs back to you!

A powerful poem. Should be read by everyone who wants to bury the climate change debate.

Love this. Your sense of truth reveals itself always in your words. Have you found your truth?

Hi Peter! I hope Charles reads your nice comment. (Is your question to him or to me?) Thank you for reading his poem!

For you. I wonder about my own truth these days …

I know what you mean by “these days”, Peter. But we need to hang on to our truths. I do continue to have hope! ๐
