.
Are they really lifeless
those empty arms
of winter
branching leafless
in naked grace?
Gaia says no,
that deep in frozen dreams
memories thicken,
sweet syrup
of other times gone
and dreams to come.
Till then these aching limbs
reach out to the silence,
bare
but not barren.

In the most desolate times…there is still hope it would seem.

Very nice poem, Betty. And yes, they are very much alive and still growing, albeit more slowly. 🙂

Thank you, Eliza! Here in the Pacific Northwest growth is imperceptible in winter. But it’s been relatively mild this year, so I’m hoping to see the first signs of swelling leaf buds in the next month. 🌲😁

This is a perfect poem for January 20 – the day of the Women’s March! Much promise, and that’s a very good thing. Reaching out, not barren – YES!

Thank you for your comment, Sharon. Yes! 🙂 There’s a new positive energy afoot and hopefully it’ll reach the critical mass necessary for awakening and change.

They wait, as with Persephone in the underworld, for her return to her mothers arms, for the sun to cross the Tropic of Cancer, and open the gates to the sky

They wait, we all wait. 🙂 Thanks for the poetic comment, Peter. Always good to hear from you!

Containment of sweetest syrup. ..love this idea. Oh so good! Wow. Surpasses anything I could ever write. You push me to try harder. Love your work!

Audrey, thank you – that’s so kind of you to say. I love YOUR work and wouldn’t say that mine surpasses anyone’s. Your poetry is always so rich in meaning – so much between the lines. And that’s hard to do as well as you do!
