.
It rolls in to me
one fresh churned wave
of salt-laden soup
in mussel shell blue
.
with armor of chiton
in sea-weed sway
and twists of driftwood
on layers of foam
.
bringing crab legs and agates
in dustings of gold
that buckle and rattle
kaleidoscope stones
.
and as barnacles yawn
to taste the high tide
it rolls in the next one
for you.

Glad you can feel it! Though the soup’s pretty cold still. 🤗💖

Maybe I should call it a chowder rather than soup. 😉

Nicely done, I especially like the first stanza. This makes me miss the ocean.

Thank you, Ali. Hope you can at least visit the ocean once in awhile. 🙂

Thanks very much, Sarah! Glad you liked it. (I wanted it to be “pebbles” but it broke the rhythm….)

You’ve captured the magic of the sea, especially from a child’s view where every aspect is as wonderful as the next.

Thank you, Sharon – I like that idea, read from a child’s viewpoint. Now that you mention it, my kids would’ve enjoyed this back when….

Ah, yes! I miss our home which was close to Puget Sound. Now the nearest saltwater is two hours away. But at least it’s still doable. 🙂

I’m 3+, but again doable. Thinking of camping this summer, or sometime soon. Lived in Rocky Point, LI many years ago. I can walk on the worst rocky beaches ⛱:-)

Rocks or sand, as long as it has waves and tides! 🙂

This poem tastes of the sea. Not just fine imagery but an engagement of the senses. Thank you for saving me the train fare.

Love the ocean but only visit the ones here in WA. I do miss the beaches of my youth, though, in CA. I could swim in them forever. Beautiful poem, Betty.

Thank you again, Renee. A warm ocean beach sounds really nice right now! (I like Puget Sound too but it’s nothing like the ocean. And it’s so cold…)

Another fine piece, Betty. Salt tang and stiff breeze.
