.
Forty years ago today – May 18th, 1980 – Mount St. Helens erupted in Washington State, killing 57 people, including one of my dearest friends, her husband, and her two young children. Most of those who died were camping in the supposed “safe zone” around the mountain. No one imagined that the volcano would explode sideways to the north, ending the lives of those who thought they weren’t in danger. (100 miles away in the Seattle area we heard two explosions, like sonic booms.)
Barb was always full of laughter, always saw the funny side of life. The poem below was written shortly after her death. (This is a re-post.)
.
.
(In memory of Barbara Pierce Morris Seibold, 1947 – 1980)
.
You laughed above the heads
of those who couldn’t see
your wings,
but those of us with vision
always flew along with you.
Even in the rain
you’d soar above the mud
with a smile and a wink.
.
But just this once
your takeoff was too slow —
St. Helens grabbed you
in her smoky claws
and with one spicy belch
she burned your wings away….
.
I found a bird
the cat brought in,
buried it
in forget-me-nots,
then heard your laughter
rise from the dust
and fly
to the curlicue clouds.

It’s always good to hear from you. Hope all’s well.

Beautiful. Doubtless the bird and she shared a spirit, at least for that time. 💞

Thanks, Bela. I think you’re right that she and the bird shared a spirit. The memorial for Barb was out of town and I was unable to go…so instead I went out into our back yard while the memorial was going on and there found the dead bird. I took it back to a special spot where the wildflowers were growing and buried it. It seemed the perfect metaphor.
Hope all’s well with you. I’ve been out of touch here…. always hoping to get caught up someday. 😏
Take good care ❤️🦋😊

That’s so true, Willow. We became friends when we were 11 and had many hilarious adventures through the years. I could write a book! 🙂

I love the thought of long friendships they are beautiful. How are you and yours coping ? We are okay, just tired. Hubby’d mum has had the Covid , she is 100, was in hospital for a month was home 3days but they have taken her in to hospital again . She has had more siezures , the reason they took her into hospital in the first place. It’s all very exhausting. Be careful and safe 💜💜💜

Willow, I’m really sorry to hear that your mother-in-law is back in the hospital. That’s so scary, especially for someone her age. I do hope she’ll do better and be able to go back home soon. (I can also imagine how exhausting it is for everyone else. Very stressful!)
Take care and try to get some rest so that YOU stay well. ❤️❤️❤️

Thanks very much, Sarah. Yes, she was a special person with a beautiful soul. We were best friends from the 6th grade on. We both had a goofy sense of humor and I still think of her whenever something strikes me funny. And that’s a good thing. 🙂

It doesn’t seem like 40 years – the stories I read about those who were killed are still fresh. I am so sorry for the loss of this dear friend of yours and her family. Your tribute is lovely. Certainly her soul smiled for your heartfelt words, for your enduring friendship.

Thank you again, Sharon. I can’t believe it’s been 40 years either. The visitors center at Mount St. Helens has a plaque with the names of all those whose lives were taken. Though it’s not very far away I’ve never been able to bring myself to visit the area…to view the plaque. Maybe someday.
