Shadows grow hungry
the sky is in knots,
apples are mellow
the faeries draw lots,
.
rabbits have vanished
from safe hiding spots,
hawk flies in circles
connecting the dots.

.
It all begins to crinkle,
the leaves, the sky
the boundaries of our vision.
Green ruffles turn to gold,
romaine edges of a dream
that curls and wrinkles
in the sun’s retreat.
Our shadows too turn ragged,
we feel them
stretch
and fold
their origami corners
that we too may slumber
in the pause
between now and again.

Fall whistles through the trees,
branches sway half bare of leaves,
come hither dances in the breeze,
don’t stop, take it all off please!

.
Summer loses its neon edge,
turns more to the gentle shades
of terracotta, celadon green,
and lavender gone to seed.
.
Gaia takes a weary breath,
gathers her spent offspring
into a hushed circle.
There she tells them stories
of blithering winds
and biting snow,
and cold, cold, cold.
You must rest, she says.
.
Oh no, not yet, they beg her,
pointing to a shrinking
ray of sun.
And over on the hillock
there is one more splash of pink.
.
Gaia smiles and nods her head.
There will be time enough
for them to sleep.

Without all their leaves
did the trees lose their beauty
or was it revealed?

for Dad (1915 – 1997)
.
It’s a long, silent fall
into the days where Dad
is spoken in past tense.
He was tall
like autumn shadows –
he made us laugh
like the dancing, crackled leaves
around our feet.
And he would fast remind us
that trees return
to green
in this orbit’s gentle whirling
when spring gives back again.

The air is spinning!
Squadrons of maple-copters
take the fertile earth.

‘Tis fall, indeed!
I love when flowers
go to seed
and chickadees
come to feed
and there’s no need
to deadhead,
nor to weed.

A re-post – just an artless little ditty from Gramma Krackers. (My alter ego).
