Deep in the folds

of the flannel of night

we hear the drums call –

.

     ba ba boom.

.

Our eyes open wide

as we chew through the shackles

and dance ourselves free –

.

      ba ba boom.

.

Up the spiral we climb,

our candles held high

to shatter the gloom –

.

     ba ba boom.

.

At the top we leap clear

of gravity’s hold

on the weight of our words –

.

     ba ba boom.

.

We land on the sun

where we tear off our masks

and meet our true Selves –

.

Ba Ba Boom, Ba Ba Boom!

I wonder, elfin tree,

does your sap long to rise?

Do your cells expand

although your limbs

are harshly thwarted

every time they try to spread?

When your roots

run into walls

do they cry

at their containment?

Does it jar you

every time

you feel the cut?

And if someday I plant you

in the garden, in the sun

will you remember

to remember

how to grow?

We’re sorry

your insurance

does not cover

this affliction.

It falls

through our parameters

and so we cannot pay

to save your life.
