Baby leaves unfurl

from trees planted long ago —

tendered new in spring.

Autumn Leaving

.

Falling brittle down

through the fog

I crack and break.

.

You take me carefully

to your hearth

once more –

we knew I’d never last

till winter.

.

When the fog lifts

I crumble,

await another spring.

Rush Hour

.

From dark, wet lawns

fallen leaves flee

to the gutters,

the streets

spinning cinnamon orange

until giddy, they tumble

in sun-dried whorls

to catch the next storm

out of town.

She thought it was

the autumn sun

shining on the dogwood tree

but no

the leaves themselves

were flushed

defying the gray

with red-gold embers

self-lit in the gloom.

It was the spark

within the dead,

the nuances of yesterday,

the fire of life

banked against all odds.

Fall whistles through the trees,

branches sway half bare of leaves,

come hither dances in the breeze,

don’t stop, take it all off please!

Teasy breezy May

sun dabbles in shades of dance,

plays tag through the trees.

She thought it was

the autumn sun

shining on the maple tree,

but no

it was suspended leaves

defying the grey

with red-gold embers

self-lit in the gloom.

It was the spark

within the dead,

the nuances of yesterday,

the fire of life

banked against all odds.

Shadows of leaves dance

trees and sunlight paint the walls

thank God for windows.
