When I cross

your path again

I’ll build a cairn

for you, my friend –

.

and all who pass

shall add a stone

and ne’er shall

we be alone.

Washing dishes,

longing out the window

at trees

when suddenly the ends

of the universe touch

like the tips of white wings

and I’m there at that center

where nothing exists

but a soapy plate

and the clear hot water

rinsing it clean.

She prayed to the gods,

“let me make love

to the trees in your forest”

but the gods were silent

and so she implored them again

“let me couple with the creek

that sings through your valley,

bear me up

to embrace your mountains,

cradle me down

to mate with the sea”

.

but again the gods were silent

and again she cried out

with trembling heart,

“please grant me consummation

with the universe this night!”

.

and once more

the gods were silent

but this time

they sent a man to her,

a man who had prayed

for the same.

Yes, I talk to trees and birds,

spiders and squirrels,

to flowers and bees

and dragonflies.

They like to hear

how beautiful they are

and then

they tell me their stories

and I listen.

And she prayed to the heavens,

let me make love

to the trees in your forest!

And so she prayed again,

Let me embrace your mountains

and mate with the sea!

But again the gods were silent.

And again she cried out

My lord! Grant me consummation

with the universe this night!

And once more the gods were silent.

But this time
