She prayed to the gods,

“let me make love

to the trees in your forest”

but the gods were silent.

And so she implored them again

“let me couple with the creek

that sings through your valley,

bear me up

to embrace your mountains,

cradle me down

to mate with the sea”

but again the gods were silent.

And once more she cried out

with trembling heart,

“grant me consummation

with the universe this night!”

And once more

the gods were silent

but this time

they sent to her

a shaman,

one who was desiring

the same.

Is grief a particle

or a wave

that washes over

.

the speed of light

bending space around

our massive loss?

.

Or is it just

the parenthetic spark

in an equation

.

the final proof

that love

connects us all?

He cuts away gold-threaded robes,

rips the collar from his voice,

kicks away the leaded boots

and finds that he can dance

beyond the trappings

of the mortar

and the folly of prestige.

And as he breaks the bindings

that had camouflaged his heart

he sees a new light

in the mirror

and finally meets himself.

(another old one from the 70’s)

In white light

she turns to me,

waiting by the fountain.

Hello again, she smiles.

She beckons me

and I become

enfolded

in her sacred peace.

She knows me well

for she is me,

in a distant time.

I long to reach

your thoughts, I sigh.

Not yet, she says,

you need more light.

I gather up

a few stray rays

before her warmth

begins to fade.

Tomorrow?

comes the whisper

from the Whole

that I shall be.
